Humus & Humility is an online exhibition illustrating the beautiful relationship
of Orthodoxy and the environment. Through photographs of monastery gardens
and the surrounding landscape on the Mount Athos peninsula combined with texts
from Orthodox bishops, we hope to inform and inspire humanity of the importance
of caring for the natural environment.
The title is taken from two elements essential to this purpose.
hu-mus (hyoo-muhs) n. the dark organic material in soils,
produced by the decomposition of vegetable or animal
matter and essential to the fertility of the earth.
hu-mil-i-ty (hyoo-mil-i-tee) n. the state or quality of
being humble; a modest sense of one's own merit.
